I think we’ve spent far too long centering everything in schools around the needs of students—no matter the cost to educators.
We hear “students first,” “whatever it takes,” and “do it for the kids.” While the intention is good, this short-sighted approach ignores something vital:
Kids are deeply impacted by the physical and emotional well-being of the adults who teach them.
If their teachers are exhausted, frazzled, disrespected, overworked, and micromanaged … there’s no way they can consistently be the best version of themselves or provide the kind of learning experience children deserve.
If we care about students, we HAVE to prioritize teachers. We've had our needs pitted against one another, when the solutions are in the overlap.
This school year cannot be another one where you accept everything dumped on your plate in the name of “closing learning gaps.” Your students are not “behind” because you didn’t work hard enough. So working even harder won’t be the fix.
You could work 24/7 this year and it still wouldn’t be enough.
So, let’s try something different.
