5 brain-based ways to help kids who give up on assignments

When students give up on assignments or get overwhelmed, it’s tough to find ways to help them re-engage.

So, I’ve invited Dr. John Spencer of The Creative Classroom podcast to help us uncover 5 brain-based ways to help kids who shut down in class.

John is a former middle school teacher and current college professor on a quest to transform schools into places of creativity and wonder.

Read or listen in as John and I explore how to:

  • Intentionally cultivate self-empowerment (the ability to self-regulate and self-direct)
  • Introduce creative constraints when kids are overwhelmed
  • Use the gradual release model to slowly acclimate students to more self-directed work
  • Think diagnostically, looking for root causes beyond those related to behavior
  • Call impromptu workshops when you notice a significant number of students struggling

Here’s a few highlights from my conversation with John ...

"It’s not about having a ton of tools in your toolbox. You just need a few that really work, like pulling students aside for a quick workshop when they’re stuck."

"AI is a game-changer. Tools like ChatGPT or MagicSchool can tutor students, scaffold their learning, and simplify instructions—allowing you to focus on more personalized support."

"Sometimes we feel so pressed for time that we just want to push through, but taking a moment to recalibrate can actually get things back on track and save time in the long run."

This is an issue that's personal to me, as I've shared on the podcast before: I was a disengaged student who nearly failed high school. Having caring teachers and other adults who didn't give up allowed me to find my way in my own time.

Throughout my life, I often wondered if there was something wrong with my brain, or my willpower. I couldn't understand why I felt unfocused and inconsistent in my productivity when everyone else seemed to just ... do the thing? I made this 2 minute video to share my challenges / diagnoses (both as a student and adult) that have fueled my study of motivation over the years. Can't view it above? Click here. For over two decades, I've been obsessed with understanding what truly drives...

Time blocking sounds simple: just map out when you’ll do each task in your day. 2:30 pm- 3:00 pm: Return emails 3:00 pm-3:45 pm: Grade papers But if you’ve ever tried to follow a plan and still accomplished only a fraction of it, you know time blocking is not always that straightforward. Teaching is unpredictable: A student needs you. A parent calls. A colleague pops in. Suddenly the block of time you thought you had is gone. And then the guilt creeps in: Why can’t I ever stick to my plan?...

After 23 years of creating digital resources for educators, I'm ready to spend more time offline. It's not that I stopped enjoying the work of writing, podcasting, and developing curriculum and online courses. I still do! And in fact, I have a new app-based resource that's releasing later this month. I just feel like there are additional ways to use my gifts, time, talent, and resources without a screen in between me and the folks I work with. So in 2026, I'm going to start hosting regular...
